Migraine and Salt
Migraine sufferers are usually on the hunt for home-remedies they can use without having to resort to prescribed or over the counter medicines. I came across the article (see link below) by Dee Cohen, a writer and publisher of health topics, that includes salt consumption as a migraine abortive. The theme of the article is that sometimes a migraine can be treated naturally and drug-free, and catalogues several natural ideas, some new and some old. It's an excellent article, and I encourage you to read it - but the paragraph that got my attention was the one suggesting that you eat a salty food to calm a migraine attack as it starts. Now in all my migraine studies that's not something I'd come across before, but I have sometimes noticed that I crave savoury things when an attack is pending or in progress, so perhaps there's something in it after all. By coincidence a couple of days after I read the article I was very stressed (well, it was Christmas time) and felt a migraine looming. Remembering the salt suggestion, I bought a bag of salted peanuts! OK, not a really healthy purchase, but I do rather enjoy them. Anyway, this packet was in the nature of a test for readers of my migraine blog (below)! No expense spared for my clients.... I'm delighted to report that after eating about a third of the salted peanuts my looming migraine never developed. Coincidence? You tell me! I'd love to hear from anyone who knows any scientific explanation for this. |
