Mobile Phones: Love 'Em, or Hate 'Em?
By Joy Healey
More years ago than I care to remember, I was one of a very few people I knew who had a mobile phone - in connection with business. And how important I felt, with my brick-sized phone. Well they've really moved on in the ensuing years and so many people have them it's amazing. But are they good or are they bad? Here are a few thoughts Pros: * You feel so much safer when you're out alone late and have access to your phone. Help is only a phone call away. * Stop people worrying by rearranging appointments if you're running late * Keep in touch with children and the elderly * You can lie about where you're making a call from * Squeeze every spare minute out of the day - you can even make phone calls as you're walking in the park (but that's a pro when I do it. See "cons" for when other people do it.) * They're really useful in developing countries - for instance fishermen setting out to market with their catch can ring round markets to see where there is demand to save a wasted trip Cons: * Biggest hate... You're on the phone, then your mobile rings and someone says "Your other line's engaged" (Yes, hello, I'm TALKING on it) * Your caller could be lying about where they're making a call from * Disturb the peace - you're never free; on a train, out shopping, even (err) walking in the park. Either someone will be ringing YOU or you'll have to listen to intimate details of someone else's life as they pour their heart out to a mobile phone. And they never do it quietly, do they? * You buy a snazzy new model, and first outing AFTER the insurance finishes, it slithers gently onto the supermarket floor and smashes * They give me headache. I won't get into a debate about "waves". All I'll say is, if I talk too long, I feel bad * They encourage over-spending in people who can ill-afford it * I feel an idiot because my texting is so slow * And oh, those dreadful ring-tones! * The way suppliers make you take out insurance that you know you don't want, because they hope you'll forget to cancel the direct debit Yet.... for all the "cons", I wouldn't be without my mobile phone, and I guess you may feel the same. If not - add a comment showing your pet hates too. |
